I recently saw a post on Facebook promoting the new film APParition which is set to be released in theaters next month. Personally, I was hoping the movie would not get much attention due to the fact the premise of the movie is based on false history, yet their trailer claims it was based on real events. This sort of thing happens all too often and sadly unless a real historian gets in there and starts researching the facts, many false stories are taken at face value and the masses believe what they see on the big screen. Case in point, the movie “The Conjuring. ” In that movie, that is supposed to be from   the case files of Ed and Lorraine Warren, the movie is set around the Perron family’s time   living in the old farmhouse in Burrillville, Rhode Island where they were allegedly tormented by a sinister spirit which the Perron’s and the Warren’s blamed on a lady by the name of Bathsheba Sherman. I successfully debunked the entire “backstory” to Bathsheba that was perpetuated not only in the movie, but in the books that have been published about the home, too.   You see, many times urban legends, folklore and just made up stories are accepted as fact without anyone questioning it. Sadly that happened in this case, and now millions of people believe that Bathsheba Sherman was an evil witch who murdered her baby as a sacrifice to Satan and haunted the home. This is FALSE. I have proven it, but again, when movies come into play sometimes the stories take on a life larger than you can imagine and many times, even people such as   myself who try so very hard to set the facts straight are faced with a daunting task. Going back to the new film, APParition.   When I first heard of the movie being filmed there, I sought out the co-producer of the film to ask if the rumors were true that they were using a story that took place there as a part of their movie. He confirmed this, along with noting that they changed the person’s name (well last name anyway). I was saddened and disgusted by this, since they were taking bits and pieces of a true story and changing it to fit their own agenda. I was also upset when I viewed the trailer because although Preston did have its stories of scandals, abuse of power and severe mistreatment to the wards, there is no record of them beating the boys to death. There is a huge difference between corporal punishment, flogging or abuse and actual murder! Yes, there were wards who died from illnesses, suicide, and some were accidental deaths. Examples of such cases of an accidental death was Tahema Vann, the boy who drowned in the swimming hole, or the two wards who were buried alive after a trench they were digging collapsed. And yes, there were a few wards who died after trying to escape. These two I considered as homicides: the shooting deaths of  Herman Huber and Joseph Morgan, which I place fault with the staff. While in other cases, such as Sam Goins', it appears his death was somewhat his own fault. Still, there is no smoking-gun evidence that there was a history of boys who were murdered there on a regular basis. There were a few more mysterious deaths that I have found over the years that I would like to have answers to, such as Nicholas Hamilton, and even Grant Walker, but unless we were there we cannot definitively say either way what really happened. Preston had its share of good and bad stories, but you cannot demonize the entire institution for a few events that took place over the entire 66 years* that the “Castle” (Administration Building) was in operation at the school.  Not all the people who worked at Preston were bad, not all the wards that were there were good either.  I should know, I have written two books on the subject. Again, like I stated, there is no denying that there were periods of time that the Administration at Preston abused and mistreated their wards, there is plenty of documentation of that. But again, the place wasn't some murder house where boys came in and didn't leave. With the stories I have researched and written about, I have proven that yes, there have been some bad incidents that took place there at different times, but the school proved to be a place that helped many boys go on to live decent, upstanding lives. (*For the record, the school continued to run for many years even after the “Castle” was closed. ) Anna Corbin The person whose story was “borrowed” for the film APParition, was none other than the head housekeeper who was murdered at Preston, Anna Corbin, but instead they changed her to Anna Collins and made her the “caretaker. ” Just like they changed the name of the Superintendent to the “Warden. ” I just want to warn everyone out there that anything you see in this movie relating to Anna’s story or even the stories about the boys at Preston is not factual and should not be taken seriously. Anna is not a ghost haunting the castle. She is not evil and does not want to seek revenge. She has never “possessed” anyone (like what Zak Bagan’s tried to claim during his visit to the castle), and she never lived at the castle either. When she died she was 52 years old. Her husband had passed away, her son had passed away and her daughter had grown up and was married. Again, anything you see in this film is a far cry from any sort of factual information. I am hurt to see that Anna Corbin’s story continues to be exploited over and over from one paranormal show to the next, and from one movie to the next. When will people let her rest in peace? Filmmaker Eliza Hittman’s ‘Never Rarely Sometimes Always’ is a starkly told film that illustrates the obstacles blocking ordinary American women from proper healthcare. When 17-year-old Autumn (newcomer Sidney Flanigan) finds out she’s pregnant, she realises that her options in rural Pennsylvania are severely limited. Unable to confide in her parents or a local doctor, Autumn and her cousin Skylar (Talia Ryder) pocket some cash from their grocery store jobs and take a bus to New York, where abortion is legal. Hittman’s approach to the material doesn’t editorialise, allowing its audience to infer the systemic failures surrounding Autumn’s predicament. It features heavily throughout the film yet if it was left out of the film the plot and theme of the movie would still be the same. Αλλά αυτό το… κακό, με τις γυναίκες που σκηνοθετούν φιλμ διαφορετικών genre για να μας πείσουν ότι μπορούν το ίδιο καλά με κάθε άνδρα συνάδελφό τους, πρέπει να σταματήσει άμεσα. Διότι, εκτός από μέτρια αποτελέσματα (στις περισσότερες περιπτώσεις που αφορούν mainstream «παραγγελιές» του Χόλιγουντ), φροντίζουν να «πειράζουν» και θέματα και μηνύματα αυτών των φιλμ με προφανείς ιδέες και την αποχρώσεων #MeToo agenda της παρούσης, κάνοντας διπλή ζημιά! Στα «Μαύρα Χριστούγεννα», δε, προστίθεται και η… διαφυλετική agenda δικαιωμάτων και κάπου χάνεται ο μπούσουλας, φτάνοντας στο σημείο να αισθάνεσαι ότι δεν παρακολουθείς ταινία τρόμου αλλά politically correct καμπάνια για την girl power και την black power, που στην τελική μάλλον κακό κάνει παρά ενισχύει τον οποιονδήποτε αγώνα όταν μοιάζει περισσότερο με «ντουντούκα» στη διαπασών. Εδώ έχουμε ένα «remake» του γνωστού ομώνυμου slasher « Black Christmas » (1974), το οποίο δεινοπάθησε πολύ χειρότερα το 2006, με ακόμη μία εκμοντερνισμένη εκδοχή. Χωρίς να αποτελεί κάτι το σπουδαίο (και) το original, έχει μείνει στη μνήμη μας λόγω της σύνδεσής του με τον εορτασμό των Χριστουγέννων (φιγουράρει σε σχετικές λίστες, δηλαδή) και για κάποια δημιουργικά και λειτουργικά υποκειμενικά πλάνα τα οποία διαθέτει (προ «Νυχτών με τις Μάσκες» κιόλας! ). Στο φιλμ της Σοφία Τακάλ έχει παραμείνει μονάχα η βασική storyline (άγνωστος serial killer καθαρίζει κορίτσια αδελφότητας κολεγίου) και έχουν προστεθεί φεμινιστικές (κυρίως) διδαχές και υποπλοκές που αγγίζουν τα όρια του… σινεμά του φανταστικού (! ). Εάν έλειπε αυτό το τελευταίο, το οποίο πραγματικά δεν προσθέτει κάτι το ουσιώδες στην πλοκή, και είχαμε και απλόχερες δόσεις αίματος ή gore στις σκηνές φόνων (μιλάμε για αποθέωση του PG-13 rating, ούτε το μπήξιμο αιχμηρών αντικειμένων δεν μας επιτρέπεται να δούμε σε πρώτο πλάνο! ), το έργο θα ήταν σαφώς πιο απολαυστικό. Σοφία Τακάλ, εάν έβλεπες «Scream Queens» στην τηλεόραση, θα μάθαινες πώς παίζεται μπαλίτσα… Έστω, το όλο πράγμα τσουλάει ικανοποιητικά σε ρυθμό και, για να επανέλθω στην αρχική μου παρατήρηση, αυτοσαρκάζεται με (λανθάνουσες ή μη δόσεις) χιούμορ, που θέλει τα αγόρια του κολεγίου να υπηρετούν κάτι το (άκυρα) «μεταφυσικό», λες και η (επίσης σεναριογράφος Τακάλ) θέλει να θίξει τον εγωισμό και ορμονικό δυναμισμό του «ισχυρότερου» φύλου. Αυτό το κομμάτι της κριτικής ενός ανδροκρατούμενου συστήματος, που σήμερα αναγκάζεται να παλέψει μέχρι… ανθρωποκτονίας κατά συρροή για να «καταποντίσει» το ωστικό κύμα της φεμινιστικής αντίδρασης και να οδηγήσει ξανά τα θηλυκά στα καθήκοντα του νοικοκυριού και μόνο, δίνει στο φιλμ μία αφορμή να σταθεί στα πόδια του, μετατρέποντάς το όχι σε θρίλερ τρόμου πια αλλά σε «παρωδία» κοινωνικών στερεοτύπων, η οποία οδηγεί σε ένα επικό… ξεμάλλιασμα και ξυλοφόρτωμα, μετά ουκ ολίγων ανθρώπινων απωλειών!

Φυσικά, και καθώς περνάμε μια περίοδο όπου η κινηματογραφική βιομηχανία δείχνει να έχει παθιαστεί από τα remakes/reboots κάθε είδους και επειδή κάποιος παραγωγός εκεί έξω πιστεύει πως το ανεκδιήγητο remake του 2006 με τον ίδιο τίτλο δεν ήταν αρκετό και πως χρειαζόμαστε και ένα ακόμα, άλλη μια καλτ ταινία «κατακρεουργείται» με ένα ακόμα remake το οποίο πραγματικά δεν το ζήτησε κανείς. Εχοντας σαν κορμό της την κεντρική ιδέα της ταινίας του ’74, όπου τα κορίτσια μιας αδελφότητας απειλούνται από έναν μανιακό δολοφόνο την περίοδο των Χριστουγεννιάτικων διακοπών τους, η σκηνοθέτης Σοφία Κατάλ, η οποία συνυπογράφει και το σενάριο μαζί με την Εϊπριλ Γουλφ, αποφασίζει να μην ακολουθήσει την ίδια ιστορία, πέρα από κάποιες έξυπνες αναφορές εδώ κι εκεί, αλλά να μεταφέρει την πλοκή στην εποχή της #metoo επανάστασης και της γυναικείας χειραφέτησης. Χτυπώντας την κουλτούρα του βιασμού, της πατριαρχίας, της τοξικής αρρενωπότητας και της «boys will be boys» συμπεριφοράς, η Κατάλ προσπαθεί να συνδυάσει τον τρόμο της γυναικείας κακοποίησης από μια τοξικά μάτσο κοινωνία με το είδος των slasher ταινιών - πράγμα που δείχνει ως ενδιαφέρον, αλλά που καταλήγει γρήγορα να ευτελίζει με ένα ξεδιάντροπο τρόπο το ίδιο το μήνυμά που θέλει να περάσει. Κι αυτό γιατί για την Κατάλ φαίνεται πως, μέχρι το φινάλε, υπάρχει μόνο ένα είδος γυναικών και ανδρών: οι δυναμικές γυναίκες που δεν θα υποταχτούν για κανέναν λόγο σε κανέναν άνδρα, και οι σατανικοί άνδρες όπου όλοι τους είναι εν δυνάμει βιαστές και έτοιμοι να κακοποιήσουν ανυπεράσπιστες γυναίκες. Ναι τόσο απλά. ΟΚ, ακόμα και αν δεχτούμε πως πρόκειται για μια ταινία η οποία προσπαθεί να περάσει τα μηνύματά της όσο πιο απλοϊκά και in your face γίνεται για να γίνουν κατανοητά από όλους, τότε γιατί αναλώνεται μέχρι και το φινάλε με εύκολες απαντήσεις στα πιο σημαντικά ερωτήματα (γυναίκες – καλές, άντρες – κακοί), χωρίς να δείχνει την απαραίτητη τόλμη, όπως η ίδια θέλει τις ηρωίδες της να έχουν, και να κάνει το επόμενο βήμα; Χωρίς έστω κάποιο βιτριολικό χιούμορ και με το κοινωνικό της σχόλιο να δείχνει τόσο εύκολο που σε δυσαρεστεί, η ταινία καταλήγει νομοτελειακά, δυστυχώς, να είναι άλλη μια της σειράς, γεμάτη από προγραμματισμένα jump scares, σεναριακές ευκολίες, οι οποίες δείχνουν τόσο ξεπερασμένες, και μια εξουθενωτική παραφωνία από κλισέ, χωρίς να σέβεται ούτε την cult ταινία του ’74 αλλά ούτε το κίνημα #metoo που θέλει να υποστηρίξει. Πραγματικά «Μαύρα Χριστούγεννα» για όλους. Που Παίζεται Δες τις αίθουσες.

Καλα αυτος ο σκηνοθέτης καθε γιορτή την κάνει ταινία θρίλερ μια με το χαλοουγιν και τωρα Χριστούγεννα ανυπομονώ για το Πάσχα. Αφού παίζει η Εμίλια σίγουρα αξίζει! Και με την αξέχαστη μουσική του θρύλου του George Michael 💗. Θα ηταν πολυ καλη για βουβη ταινια. 😜. Το κολέγιο Χόθορν κλείνει για τις διακοπές και 4 φοιτήτριες ετοιμάζονται να διασκεδάσουν μέχρι τελικής πτώσεως, όταν ένας μασκοφόρος αρχίζει να δολοφονεί κορίτσια του κολεγίου. Το καναδέζικο Black Christmas του 1974 άνοιξε τον δρόμο για πασίγνωστα slashers στα επόμενα χρόνια και, αν και διατηρεί ως σήμερα το κοινό του, μοιάζει αδικημένο από την ενασχόληση της pop κουλτούρας μαζί του σε σχέση με αντίστοιχες ταινίες – πρώτη και πιο χαρακτηριστική το Halloween. Δεν έμεινε πάντως εντελώς ανέγγιχτο από τότε, υπήρξε ένα ριμέικ του 2006 που το ξέχασαν μέχρι και οι δημιουργοί του, φτάνοντας στο τωρινό που τουλάχιστον βασίζεται σε μια ξεκάθαρη λογική που αντιλαμβάνεται το zeitgeist της εποχής μας και δεν βολεύεται με ένα απλό κοπιάρισμα. Το μυστήριο της αόρατης απειλής που σκοτώνει νεαρές φοιτήτριες μιας αδελφότητας κατά τη διάρκεια των χριστουγεννιάτικων διακοπών εδώ έχει συγκεκριμένη έννοια. Η απειλή είναι η πατριαρχία που σκοτώνει αργά και διαχρονικά τα θύματά της και έχει κάνει κακό πολύ μεγαλύτερο από τον μασκοφορεμένο boogeyman της ταινίας. Η ταινία της Σοφία Τακάλ την αντιπαραθέτει με τον σύγχρονο φεμινισμό, δημιουργεί ουσιαστικά δυο αντίπαλα στρατόπεδα αλλά υποφέρει σε ένα μεγάλο μέρος της από την ανάγκη της καταγγελίας, με εκατέρωθεν βερμπαλισμούς για τη μάχη των φύλων, στρατηγική που σίγουρα δεν κάνει ένα φιλμ τρόμου (γιατί πρωτίστως αυτό βλέπουμε) πιο συναρπαστικό. On the other hand how did Elijah got here is beyond me, I'm guessing it might have something to do with productions like Maniac and Cooties, also I've noticed he produced others such as Mandy, The colour of space, so all in all, perhaps it's a choice and not a downhill slip for him.
Come to Daddy is clearly not my coup of tea, I do get the appeal it has, the dark humor managed to make me smile a few times, but jumping from one extremity to another didn't quite did it for me. I do like some consistency, sure, after a first slower half I did not mind one bit seeing some action but it came in a rather disturbing hilarious way, where I didn't quite know how to take it all in. You see, I am a big fan of productions such as The Visit, where you also see a nice blend of comedy with some disturbing elements, but that one stayed away from torture porn or gore, and it managed to have quite a nice impact on me.
All in all definitely not a bad movie, as I mentioned already, I'm sure it will be a blast for many, but not for me. I recommend it only if you're a fan of the genre.

If you do make a great burger, be sure to make enough for everyone to try! 6 Freezeland Just off the main continent of File Island, Freezeland is a chilly landscape that holds many secrets. Much like Greenland, the ice is a significant drawing factor. Done away are those pesky buildings with their architecture and function. Instead, there are snowstorms and unplugged refrigerators that hold tons of food. Also found in Freezeland are luxurious hot springs, which are the real reason to visit. The drastic change in temperature can be so relieving to the body. Like the scene from 2005’s Fantastic Four where Chris Evan’s Johnny Storm creates a jacuzzi on accident, these hot springs can be an intimate place for fun. It will help if you bring tinder and a fire starter though. 5 Colosseum If you and your friends are looking for a nice place to have a solid day out, look no further than the Colosseum. Featured in the episode where Agumon digivolved into SkullGreymon, the Colosseum is a great place to go to watch a much better version of the UFC, meaning a ton of missiles, fish attacks, and electricity. Not only are there regularly scheduled events that happen, but you can also just go there and hang out, maybe play a little bit of soccer since there are goal posts set up and balls at the ready. Sometimes you are required to swim through an underwater cavern system to find a house in the center of the world. Shimbumi’s Library serves a similar purpose to the Digital World as Ophanimon’s Castle. It is where all the data from the world is stored for easy reading. Half of the fun is the adventure to get there since it requires a lot of work. The other half is sitting down, cracking open a good book and having a conversation with one of the men who created the world around you. 2 Toy Town Rather than a mouse, the town is filled with Bear shaped imagery such as signs, floor patterns and, even, balloons. It is the perfect place for children and adults alike to take train rides and play with small toys that play back. And sometimes a cactus fights a giant teddy bear in a round of fisticuffs. You never know what you’ll see. 1 Primary Village Petting zoos, adoption days and college campuses have taught us one thing about people, they love tiny creatures. Primary Village is one of the only constants across the Digimon franchise due to its story aspects and its popularity. People love newborn babies and animals which extends to Digimon.
