Con una durata di due ore e venti, il ritmo però è piuttosto lento per uno spettatore europeo, e la storia spesso ne risente, trascinandosi e calando di interesse. Dove il film ha successo è latmosfera sfumata della Rio degli anni 50 e 60, con la bella fotografia dei panorami urbani, i locali, e la sua classe media portoghese in un declino che facilmente poteva scivolare nella povertà. Le due protagoniste incarnano bene laffetto, la nostalgia e la sofferenza della mancanza dellaltra, ma la tensione del film progressivamente va sgonfiandosi. La comparsa negli ultimi cinque minuti della grande Fernanda Montenegro (già nomination agli Oscar nel 1999 per il bellissimo Central do Brasil) in compenso è emotivamente molto coinvolgente, ma viene da chiedersi se basti come ragione per questa troppo lunga saga familiare. Characters are not that much sympathetic and the rythm is slow, everything is on surface and we couldn't delve to the characters and storylines, mostly I think because of lack of brilliant writing and dialogues.

It has a star at its centre – James McAvoy firecrackers across the stage – but its plea is for the importance not of celebrity but of art. You dont hear that very often these days. Rostands plot – silver-tongued hero woos the woman he loves for his dull-witted chum – is truly rendered but stripped of most trad attributes. No hat-doffing, no arms akimbo, no bandy-legged swordfights. No outsize nose. McAvoys Cyrano is propelled by a dynamic combination of confident display and unexplained self-doubt. He is a verbal volcano and a commanding presence, bunched up in black like a battery pack. Fighting takes the form of poetry slams: combatants see each other off with great jousts of words. There is hardly any manly running around; there is often stillness; Soutra Gilmours design – plywood walls and orange stackable chairs – is aggressively non-plumey and plain. Yet the stage is vibrant. Audience and actors are clinched together in – I can hardly believe it – rhyme: like two halves of a couplet. There is an excited, concentrated listening to Crimps escalating rhyme feats: “attitude” swims into “latitude“ then sends itself up with “platitude”. You can get high on this stuff. Not least because Vaneeka Dadhrias magnificent beatboxing – gulping, pulsing, hissing, ticking – continuously gees up the rhythm. Beatbox (given another life I would try to make it my profession) is a rising theatrical force: brought to the National by the wonderful Grace Savage five years ago and gloriously incarnated in BACs Frankenstein. It is the ur-stage sound: made on the spot by human beings; both internal and explosive. And perfect as part of the landscape in a play about sound and words. These characters are their voices: when soldiers die they take off their mics. Anita-Joy Uwajeh is a wonderfully poised and edgy Roxane; Michele Austin a gorgeous, punchy presence, who puts the poetry into patisserie, as a gourmet maker of both lemon tarts and tart verses. Tom Edden also shines, delivering his rap with a gimlet sneer. This is the first of a new Jamie Lloyd season. It makes me agog for more. Rebecca Frecknall is proving an exceptional reimaginer of familiar and neglected works. Last year her strung-out production of Summer and Smoke shivered Tennessee Williams to his core. In tackling John Websters The Duchess of Malfi, she goes some way to remaking the playwright Bernard Shaw called “the Tussaud laureate”. Frecknall finds – at least before the plot goes really bonkers gory in the second half – an unexpected stealth and stillness, and reveals a celebration of settled love before the expected riot of violence. Who would have thought the scenes between the Duch and her lover could be so delicate and so assured in their eroticism. Khalid Abdalla and Lydia Wilson, the knockout performances of the evening, meet for the first time in a lingering – so lingering it tingles with embarrassment – silence. She is intent, he is palpitating with nerves; they uncoil and wind around each other first with gestures and eventually with words. In this stripped-back text, clusters of phrases sing out new. This is a vital Webster paradox: in a brutal world – murdered children, taunting fake killings, splenetic, grotesquely strutting chaps – the manoeuvres of the brain trace ingenious and intricate verbal patterns. ‘Stealth and stillness: Lydia Wilson and Khalid Abdalla in The Duchess of Malfi. His sisters long to return not to Moscow but to Lagos; their despair is projected not as lassitude but as frustrated power. Ellamss analysis of this crucial, seldom discussed war is rigorous: he exposes filthy work by the British and reveals extraordinary activism by Biafran women. The class division in Chekhov between old and new orders – skeweringly focused when the sisters sneer at their future sister-in-laws dress – becomes more violent and overt when seen as a clash between women belonging to different warring factions. What is gained is dramatic reverberation. What is lost is the sad twist at the centre of Chekhov, that being discriminating fades into discrimination: the exercises of taste entail snobbery. Once at sea, Ramius secretly kills political officer Ivan Putin and relays false orders that they are to conduct missile drills off America's east coast. Despite the book becoming a best seller, no Hollywood studio was interested because of its content. Neufeld said, I read some of the reports from the other studios, and the story was too complicated to understand. 3] After a year and a half he finally got a high-level executive at Paramount Pictures to read Clancy's novel and agree to develop it into a film. Screenwriters Larry Ferguson and Donald Stewart worked on the screenplay while Neufeld approached the U. Navy for approval. They feared top secret information or technology might be revealed. However, several admirals liked Clancy's book and reasoned that the film could do for submariners what Top Gun did for the Navy's jet fighter pilots. [3] Captain Michael Sherman, director of the Navy's western regional information office in Los Angeles, suggested changes to the script that would present the Navy in a positive light. [4] The Navy gave the filmmakers access to several Los Angeles -class submarines, allowing them to photograph unclassified sections of both Chicago and Portsmouth to use in set and prop design. Louisville was used for the scene in which Baldwin is dropped from a helicopter to the submarine. Key cast and crew members rode along in subs, including Alec Baldwin and Scott Glenn, who took an overnight trip aboard Salt Lake City commanded by then Commander Thomas B. Fargo. Casting [ edit] Some of the principal cast had previous military service which they drew on for their roles. Sean Connery had served in the Royal Navy, Scott Glenn in the United States Marine Corps and James Earl Jones in the United States Army. Baldwin and Glenn spent time on a Los Angeles -class submarine. Baldwin was trained to drive an attack submarine. Klaus Maria Brandauer was cast as Soviet sub commander Marko Ramius but two weeks into filming he quit due to a prior commitment. [3] The producers faxed the script to Sean Connery, who at first declined because the script seemed implausible in portraying the Soviet Union as an ambitious naval power. He was missing the first page which set the story before Gorbachev's coming to power, when the events of the book would have seemed more plausible. [6] He arrived in L. A. on a Friday and was supposed to start filming on Monday but he requested a day to rehearse. [7] Principal photography began on April 3, 1989 with a 30 million budget. [7] The Navy lent the film crew Houston, Enterprise, two frigates ( Wadsworth and Reuben James) helicopters, and a dry-dock crew. [4] Filmmaker John Milius revised some of the film's script, writing a few speeches for Sean Connery and all of his Russian dialogue. [8] He was asked to rewrite the whole film but was only required to do the Russian sequences. [9] Rather than choosing between the realism of Russian dialog with subtitles, or the audience-friendly use of English (with or without Russian accents) the filmmakers compromised with a deliberate conceit. The film begins with the actors speaking Russian with English subtitles. But in an early scene, actor Peter Firth casually switches in mid-sentence to speaking in English on the word "Armageddon" which is the same spoken word in both languages. After that point, all the Soviets' dialogue is communicated in English. Connery continued using the Russian accent for the rest of the motion picture. Only towards the end of the film, at the beginning of the scene in which the Soviet and American submariners meet, do some of the actors speak in Russian again. Filming [ edit] Filming in submarines was impractical. Instead, five soundstages on the Paramount backlot were used. Two 50-square-foot (4. 6 m 2. verification needed] platforms housing mock-ups of Red October and Dallas were built, standing on hydraulic gimbals that simulated the sub's movements. Connery recalled, It was very claustrophobic. There were 62 people in a very confined space, 45 feet above the stage floor. It got very hot on the sets, and I'm also prone to sea sickness. The set would tilt to 45 degrees. Very disturbing. The veteran actor shot for four weeks and the rest of the production shot for additional months on location in Port Angeles, Washington and the waters off Los Angeles. [4] Made before sophisticated CGI became the norm in filmmaking, the film's opening sequence featured a long pull-out reveal of the immense titular Typhoon-class sub. It included a nearly full-scale, above-the-water-line mockup of the sub, constructed from two barges welded together. Each country's submarine had its own background color: Soviet submarines, such as Red October and V. Konovalov, had interiors in black with chrome trim. American ships, such as Dallas and Enterprise, had grey interiors. However, during one scene when Dallas goes to a higher alert status it was flooded with red light. Early filming was aboard USS Reuben James in the area of the Juan de Fuca Strait and Puget Sound in March 1989. The ship operated out of U. Coast Guard Station Port Angeles. The SH-60B detachment from the Battlecats of HSL-43 operated out of NAS Whidbey Island, after being displaced by the filmcrew. Most underwater scenes were filmed using smoke with a model sub connected to 12 cables, giving precise, smooth control for turns. Computer effects, in their infancy, created bubbles and other effects such as particulates in the water. [10] By March 1990, just before the film's theatrical release, the Soviet Parliament removed the Communist Party from government, effectively ending the Cold War. Set during this period, there were concerns that with its end, the film would be irrelevant but Neufeld felt that it "never really represented a major problem. To compensate for the change in the Soviet Union's political climate, an on-screen crawl appears at the beginning of the film stating that it takes place in 1984 during the Cold War. Tony Seiniger designed the film's poster and drew inspiration from Soviet poster art, utilizing bold red, white and black graphics. According to him, the whole ad campaign was designed to have a "techno-suspense quality to it. The idea was to play up the thriller aspects and downplay the political elements. [7] The film caused a minor sensation in the black projects submarine warfare technology community. [11] 12] In one scene, where USS Dallas is chasing Red October through the submarine canyon, the crew can be heard calling out that they have various " milligal anomalies. This essentially revealed the use of gravimetry as a method of silent navigation in US submarines. Thought to be a billion dollar black project, the development of a full-tensor gravity gradiometer by Bell Aerospace was a classified technology at the time. It was thought to be deployed on only a few Ohio -class submarines after it was first developed in 1973. Bell Aerospace later sold the technology to Bell Geospace for oil exploration purposes. [13] The last Typhoon-class submarine was officially laid down in 1986, under the name TK-210, but according to sources was never finished and scrapped in 1990. Spies in disguise is about a secret agent who is the best in his field. But is framed for stealing a weapon that can expose all the secret agents. So he must have the help of the tech inventor who doesn't want to harm anyone in order to save the identities of all the agents and save the world. Spies in disguise was a lot of fun and got slowly better. But did suffer from some narrative and screenplay flaws. Lets talk about this more in detail.
First of all the films animation and action sequences were great. The film like a large majority of these kinds of movies this year had fantastic animation that was very pleasing to the eye. With Walters tech creations being very inventive and visually pleasing. And the action sequences were surprisingly entertaining and inventive. When Lance ( Will Smith) did what he did best especially in the beginning it was entertaining. With hard hitting action scenes and inventive ways of defeating the bad guys it kept you consistently entertained as well as other aspects.
Next they did some interesting things with the plot and it was surprisingly very funny.
I thought that the whole dynamic of Lance changing from a human to a pidgeon was very interesting. And i had a lot of fun with the different situations they put him in as a bird as he learned how much he needed Walter and he could be a spy much easier. So i thought this was a really fun and creative plot choice from the screenwriters and director. Because of this dynamic the film was very funny. The film went all out with his humour with jokes coming at you all the time, and for the most part they landed. With Lance finding out the functions of a pidgeon being hilarious, and Walter and his gadgets were infectiously funny as well.
However i do just have to say that not all the humour landed consistently throughout the film. The humour did fall flat sometimes which left it awkward to watch in a few instances mostly involving Lance and Walter. But then they instantly made you laugh again, so the comedic tone was not consistent and it was fairly jarring and clunky in scenes when there was humour that landed and humour that didn't.
Next the film had great themes and likeable characters. The film had a great message about being weird and different being a good thing which was executed in a heartwarming way. Has there been films with similar messages yes, but spies in disguise still made it seem fresh and is a great message for todays society. Also all the characters were very likeable. Lance had this cool arrogance to him that made him very entertaining to watch, and he as his friendship with Walter became better so did he. And Walter was an extremely likeable character. Having him not having many friends really made you warm to his character. As his wacky inventions were a joy to watch. Also his view on how to deal with situations involving violence was interesting.
However my final two negatives that bought the film down slightly was its under-usage of Lance in human form and how generic it was. I liked Lances character and his action sequences so much. That i would of personally preferred if he stayed as a human more in the first act to get more action scenes and how he works on the job. But i understood why they didn't, but i would of set out the first act slightly differently. And the film did have a generic formula despite doing different things with the visuals and characters. It was still the whole main character being framed, having to save himself and learn to be a better person. We have seen it all before this was just done in a slightly slicker package then others.
My final two positives would be the great villain and the entertaining final act. The villain was delightfully evil. And they did a great job at making him really dislikable with his killing and actions towards likeable characters was great. And his accent and half burned face just made him look really cool. And the final act was great, When it was revealed the true goal of the villain and all the characters came together you couldn't help but feel excited about what was to come. And they didn't disappoint, with surprisingly dark moments as well as Lance embracing Walters ideas they ended the film on a high.
Overall spies in disguise offers a funny,well animated and excellently voice acted piece of entertainment that doesn't offer anything new to the genre but still is a lot of fun.

In a Q&A following the screening, Australian director Richard Lowenstein, a long-time collaborator of the groups, acknowledged that the film took some 18 months to edit. He also addressed the choice not to have his interview subjects on camera: “Michaels really the only talking head in the film. I wanted to immerse viewers in a time capsule, ” Lowenstein said, explaining that showing modern interviews would interrupt the ‘80s-‘90s time frame in the documentary. The use of a countdown timeline for his last day lends a harrowing closeness to Hutchences rising panic as things go wrong back in London while hes in Autstralia, and he reaches out to friends with mounting desperation. However, the film also shows that the sensationalist media reports around his suicide — which was speculated by the tabloids to be “auto-erotic asphyxiation” — may have singled out just one contributing factor. A key turning point in the singers life was a 1992 accident that he carefully hid. Out bicycling with Christensen, the pair had stopped for a slice of pizza, which Hutchence was eating in the street. An irate taxi driver shoved the singer and he fell, hitting his head on the curb. Christensen — who, like many other close friends, waited for many years for a comfortable forum to tell their stories — remembers blood leaking from Hutchences ears as he lay unconscious in the street. Hutchence woke up in the hospital, and angry and combative, refused to be treated. Nearly immediately, his underlying depression worsened, his rage increased, his memory worsened, and its eventually revealed via MRIs that Hutchences brain injury had also caused him to lose his sense of smell. All his intimates noticed his increased aggression; his bandmates recall a longtime mate who had lost his sense of self. The information brought to light in “Mystify” makes it seem likely that Hutchences suicide was exacerbated by his brain injury, and possibly Prozac and other prescription drugs found in his system.
